Culture

Literally, our name comes from the fact that we both have coily roots of varying tension.  After thoroughly researching our decision, my sister and I decided to finally take the plunge and stop relaxing our hair. This decision was not a political statement, but rather a conscious decision to stop torturing our tresses and body with harmful chemicals. Through the diverse experiences, websites, blogs, and videos available on-line from the beautiful naturals that inspired and taught us, we were able to learn so much about managing and embracing our coils.  As a result, we decided that we would create our own blog to chronicle our journey, contribute to the body of knowledge, share lessons-learned, and create an alternative forum for discussion.  Once we decided to do this, things progressed and we both realized that we were interested in discussing so much more than our hair.

Then we decided to get a little philosophical and deep.  ‘Coily Roots’ is representative of so much more than hair.  It symbolizes our mental, spiritual, and physical voyage to wellness.  It represents the fact that we are indefinable and no two coils are alike.  Whether you are raising children with coils and/or have coils yourself, it is important to recognize that we are so much more than a coil.  We are educated and ambitious, nerdy and goofy, beautiful and sexy, coy and aggressive, professional and eclectic, and religious and spiritual.
